The “Jewel of the Lakeshore,” Ascher’s Capitol Theatre first opened its doors on June 16, 1921 with a live performance of “A Review of the Times.” Over the years the original promise of “Refined vaudeville, high class photoplays and the best road show attractions” was expanded to include talkies, high school graduations, war bond rallies, the Mirro cooking demonstrations, and visits by state and national political leaders. It’s beauty, size and comfort have made the Capitol a magnet for cultural and civic activities for generations.
Now, nearly a century later, the Capitol Civic Centre remains a culteral arts resource for local lakeshore and surrounding communities. It’s a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve an architecturally significant historic venue for the enjoyment and enhancement of the performing arts, arts education and civic experience. We invite you to treasure the legacy and support the vision.
